The idea

Named after the advocate's white bands.

An advocate's assistant should feel like the chamber's favourite junior, not a robot. Bando is drawn in the product's own Paper & Ink colours, in chunky pixels so it still reads at 16 pixels in the top bar.

The name

From the white bands worn with the black coat in every Indian court, and banda: a good guy to have on your side. It says the same in English and Hindi and is easy to type after "Ask".

One body, separate layers

The body, the face, the outfit and the props are separate layers. Any face works in any outfit and any animation plays in any outfit, so 9 outfits and 15 animations give 135 finished loops without drawing each one.

Wardrobe

A different outfit for every room of the office.

The app dresses Bando for the area you are in, in that area's own colour. Pick any look to play it in the studio below.

Animation studio

Fifteen animations, in every outfit.

Each loop is a handful of frames held for a fixed time, the way the app plays them. Step through the frames below, and take the GIF of any combination.

Faces

Seventeen faces, two eyes each.

Every mood is a few dark pixels moved on the same face, which is why they read at any size. The app picks the face from what is happening: reading a record, finding a judgment, an error, a quiet Inbox.

Life in the top bar

What Bando does while you work.

With the assistant panel closed, Bando acts out a small scene in the top bar and now and then says something in a pixel speech bubble. These are the lines it says in the app.

In use

Built to read small.

The same 26×15 frame scales by whole pixels only, from the 16-pixel badge in the menu to a full-width error page.

Whole-pixel sizes
On the ink rail the yellow does the work.
Palette

Thirteen colours, each with a job.

The yellow is the product's Hi-Yellow. The outfit colours are the accents of the app's areas, so Bando always matches the room it is in.

Exports

Every variant, as a GIF.

The GIFs are rendered from the app's own sprite file, so they match what the product draws pixel for pixel. Each one is 416×240: the 26×15 frame at 16 pixels per pixel.
